Who If Not… Ester Krumbachová

This year’s Who If Not… section focuses on the work of costume designer, artist, screenwriter, and director Ester Krumbachová (1923–1996). Over the course of 35 years, she collaborated with many directors of various generations and temperaments on the visual design of dozens of films. She contributed significantly to the films of the Czechoslovak New Wave directors (Němec, Chytilová) as well as of the older generation (Vávra, Kachyňa, Jasný). According to the testimonies of the aforementioned filmmakers, her designs profoundly influenced the overall tone of the films, affecting not only the visual style but also the narrative structures. Whereas in previous years, we learned to view film through the perspective of a screenwriter or cameraman (Procházka, Heller), or to listen to film (Liška), this edition will be dedicated to the profession of a set and costume designer. And as part of the rich accompanying programme, we will also explore Krumbachová’s life and personality.
