A film director, writer, son of a famous actor – and a notorious agitator. This year’s “unknown known”, Bertrand Blier, made his name in 1974 with a film adaptation of his own novel, Going Places. This controversial black comedy about two amoral young men roaming the French countryside introduced the distinctive features of Blier’s work (Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere in the leading roles, desire to escape the monotony of provincial life, and romantic polygons). Made from the same cloth is the Oscar-winning drama Get Out Your Handkerchiefs. And, faithful to its name, the section will also feature some of Blier’s lesser-known films, such as his suspenseful debut If I Were Spy or the unconventional romance Too Beautiful for You.
